Thunderbox Road Art Exhibit to be Hosted by Grape Creek Vineyards in Fredericksburg (The Trail of the Painted Privies)

Fredericksburg, Texas: Thunderbox Road, a traveling exhibit of 12 outhouses (thunderboxes) showcasing the artistic talents of 12 of the top artists in the Hill Country, will be displayed at Grape Creek Vineyards in Fredericksburg from November 8th through November 30th, 2008.

The exhibit was created by Cedar Eaters of Texas and Sand Creek Post & Beam of Texas. Their love for farm and ranch architecture inspired them to build 12 Thunderboxes and send them to 12 of the top artists in the Hill Country.

Each artist was asked to showcase their work on their Thunderbox, creating this 12-piece exhibit that will travel from Grape Creek throughout San Antonio and the Hill Country until May of 2009, when the Thunderboxes will be auctioned at the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville.

At the auction, two prizes will be awarded: a $ 5,000 Judge’s Choice Award and a $ 5,000 People’s Choice Award. The Judge’s Panel is made up of representatives from Hill Country arts organizations and the People’s Choice award will be determined from votes cast at each hosting venue, and online at

Fredericksburg artists who are featured in the exhibit include Ben Beckendorf, who created the “Musical Mosaics” Thunderbox. Thunderbox artists represented by the Fredericksburg Art Gallery include Betty Rhodes, Greg Glowka and C.J. Latta. Betty Rhodes and Greg Glowka, both from the Wimberley area, co-produced “Animal House;” and, C.J. Latta was inspired by her Fredericksburg ranching heritage to create “Sittin’ Purdy.”

Rhodes, Glowka and Latta are also featured artists at the Fredericksburg Art Gallery’s Contemporary Masters Invitational this November. C.S. Talley, who is also represented by the Fredericksburg Art Gallery, will represent Die Kunstler von Fredericksburg on the Judge’s Panel.

There will be an artists’ reception at Grape Creek on Saturday, November 15th from 2-4pm.

Thunderbox Road is underwritten by Sand Creek Post & Beam of Texas, Cedar Eaters of Texas and presenting partners Kendall County Abstract Company, Land Design, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, Kendall Plumbing, Inc., MovinOn and McCoy’s Building Supply.
