Thunderbox Road Art Exhibit to be Hosted by
The Historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio

Art on Outhouses helps celebrate the 122nd Anniversary
of Indoor Plumbing at The Menger Hotel

San Antonio, Texas: Thunderbox Road, a traveling exhibit of 12 outhouses (thunderboxes) showcasing the artistic talents of 12 of the top artists in the Hill Country, will be on display at The Menger Hotel from January 3rd through 30th, 2009.

The Menger Hotel opened in 1859 on the site of Menger’s Brewery. The art collection of The Menger includes paintings by F.L. Van Ness -- his 12’ painting Venting Cattle on the Frisco System borrowed for the filming of the 1956 drama Giant. The table where Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders is still at the Menger. The Menger Bar, modeled after the taproom of the House of Lords Club in London, was opened in 1887 – the same year the hotel installed indoor plumbing.

With its location next to The Alamo, few hotels in San Antonio have the sense of place and history that The Menger has. “And, in January when the Riverwalk hosts events like The Mud Festival, it’s a perfect time for us to enjoy the same sense of fun.” said Ernesto Malacara, Public Relations Director and historian for The Menger.

The Thunderbox Road Art Exhibit was created by Cedar Eaters of Texas and Sand Creek Post & Beam of Texas. Their love of art and for iconic farm and ranch structures inspired them to build 12 Thunderboxes and send them to 12 of the top artists in the Hill Country.

Each artist was asked to showcase their work on their Thunderbox, creating this 12-piece exhibit that will travel from The Menger Hotel in January to the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo in February, then to The Serengeti Resort in Bergheim and finally to the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville, where the Thunderboxes will be auctioned on May 9 th, 2009.

Artists were selected from throughout the Hill Country – David Querbach, Pamela Gardner, Nancy McGalliard, Ken and Donna Malson, Thom Evans, Rex Hausmann, Dotti Brundrett , C.J. Latta, Ben Beckendorf, Betty Rhodes and Greg Glowka, Gwendolyn Listerman and Charles and Tami Kegley.

There will be an artists’ reception at The Menger Hotel on Saturday, January 17th, from 3-5pm.

Thunderbox Road is underwritten by Sand Creek Post & Beam of Texas, Cedar Eaters of Texas and presenting partners Kendall County Abstract Company, Land Design, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, Kendall Plumbing, Inc., MovinOn and McCoy’s Building Supply.
